Why would a comedian who never played even high school sports (outside of cheerleading) start a comedic podcast with her non-comedian husband about fantasy sports leagues?
Because she had to.
“My husband and I can both lean a bit to the obsessive side. One of his long-time obsessions – besides cookie jar collecting and the history of Custer’s Last Stand – is sports. And not just sports generally, but fantasy sports leagues in particular,” explains Wilmington, NC based comedian, Blaire Postman, who co-founded the My Fantasy Wife podcast with her husband, Gary Haymes.
“And in turn one of my many obsessions, is how could my husband harness his amazing capacity for sports stat knowledge as applied to fantasy sports leagues for some kind of greater benefit, like world peace or making money in the stock market. But seriously, we often have these intense conversations about everything and yet nothing, that frankly we are both WAY too invested in, and that were super fun. We wanted to carry that fun a little further,” Postman continued.
Each week, with the help of Social Media Maven, Maddy Sprenger, and Sound Engineer/Comedian/Sports Fan, Louis Bishop, the My Fantasy Wife team starts with Hot Topics or, more often, fact checking mistakes or outrageous assertions made the week before. For example, they have had to correct the alive-or-dead status of several celebrities and sports figures, including ex-NFL star Sonny Jurgensen and NASCAR driver Dick Trickle. (Spoiler alert: one was dead and one was not, and MFW was wrong about both).
Yes, they do participate in and discuss fantasy sports leagues, Postman admittedly often playing catch-up. But before long, each episode tends to be about much more: Sprenger’s new Dungeons & Dragons habit; Postman’s calculation of the historically adjusted pay of Shoeless Joe Jackson; Bishop’s coming out as an Oakland Raiders fan; Haymes’ many surprise encounters with minor celebrities; the socio-political ramifications of the instrument one played in marching band; and the push and pull between a husband and wife who both like to win.
It’s fun, but can also be unexpectedly intense with hilarious results. For instance, in Episode 5, Postman ran down the entire shocking 49 year history of Super Bowl Halftime shows. (Spoiler alert #2: Carol Channing headlined the Super Bowl Halftime show twice in the 1970’s…TWICE).
